im making lemon cake for new years day and i dont know how to zest a lemon and dont know where they sell lemon zest. Im making it for a family member whos leaving tomorrow .

Zesting a lemon in ridiculously easy and any lemon cake recipe is going to require it in some form. The zest is basically the bright yellow part of the rind. First, wash and scrub it with warm, soapy water. Rinse and dry well. Then (assuming you don’t have a zester), take a grater or peeler and carefully take off just the bright outer layer of the skin. If your recipe calls for grated lemon zest, it’s even easier. Just use the finest side to grate the lemon. Don’t go too far in one spot though. The white part of the skin in bitter.
