So my birthday is tommorow, and we do a whole celebration thing in ROTC for everyones birhday, so I’m bringing a cake, but I’m running into a dilemma, half of them like white and half like chocolate. Though theyll all eat chocolate if they have to. I know I could make a marble boxed cake but I sort of wanted to make it from scratch, so I was wondering if anyone had a recipe that makes a really good cake that I could make for this event.

I love the mix in the box but it’s overpriced for what’s in it. All you do is chop a couple of apples and stir in the mix plus two eggs, spread in a pan and bake. You add nothing else. Anyone know how to replicate this mix? i don’t want to make a cake from scratch. So i was thinking of making a rainbow cake using a bedtty crocker box.
I was thinking of just making a vanilla cake, and splitting the batter into 5 sections, in 5 different bowls. Then i was going to add a few drops of food coloring into each bowl. (each bowl a different color). Then i was going to pour one bowl at a time into the pan, making layers. Do you think after i cooked it, it would have layers of different colors? thanks!

my friends b-day is coming up soon, and she hinted for a strawberry short cake lol, and it must be amazing. i have some baking experience, and i really want to make this entire cake from scratch, i think using the boxed products would be cheating : )
sooo i have a few questions,
1) whats a good recipe?
2) how can i get that syrupy straw berry filling but not make it to sweet? is it just the amount of sugar used? would brown sugar give a better taste then granulated?
3) what produces a soft moist cake that will compliment the strawberry’s?
4) the icing has to have the fluffiness of whip cream, but taste more like a high quality icing.., any recipes for that? and it’s not butter cream, just a really tasty light and fluffy high quality whipped cream sort of.
5) ill have to experiment a lot with the cake to get it the way i want it.. so i may try to start with really small cakes like a fourth or less of the full size, will the smaller cake represent the final cake product accurately?
and.. will i need a mixer?
also it doesn’t have to be 1 link to how to make the full cake.. multiple links to making different parts of it would be just as good ; )

Do the baking instructions change if I substitute shortening with oil?

I’m baking a cake from scratch (wish me luck) and I’m going to substitute oil for shortening. Can I actually do that? I only found a few forums saying so. The instructions say to cream sugar and shortening. What do I do if I use oil again? I’m doubting I can cream the 2 so should I just mix them?
And help and links welcome!
Oh wow, thanks! Is there anything I could use instead? I thought oil sounded way too different from shortening.
