What can I substitute for milk when I am baking a cake?

I want to bake a cake, and we have no milk. Or money to go buy milk. lol, we’re students, just wanting something to do this evening. We want to make a cake from scratch and we are wondering if there is anything we could use instead of milk.
-we don’t have cream, or soymilk, or evaporated milk.
-we have ice cream and yogurt.
an easy cake recipe would be appreciated.

I can cook; I swear I can. I can make pies like mad and cookies of course, roasts, fish, smashed potatoes that I can’t keep on the table. I’ve even made perfect angelfood cake cupcakes with raspberry filling. But you give me a normal cake recipe and everything goes to hell. I watch tons of food network, it doesn’t help.
Please, this is driving me nuts. I make everything from scratch so using a cake mix is so… defeatist for me. Does anyone have a simple white or yellow cake recipe that I can maybe have some luck with? Nothing too involved and no chocolate (I’m allergic).

I seldom ever, ever, ever use a cake mix from box. I think it’s for lazy people, but I am indeed making a cake recipe, and the recipe requires the mix. So instead of following the directions on the box that say empty contents into large bowl, and then add the wet ingredients. Can I whisk together wet ingredients, and little at a time mix in the dry cake mix?

I am trying to make my own cake recipe. When I am finished baking, the cake tastes great but it always fall. What is causing this? I know that my oven is the correct temperature. I think it has to do with the amounts of my ingredients but how can you determine what is causing it to fall?

Once i was provided a double layered cake recipe. It was made from scratch, The top layer was custard and the bottom layer was cake. I use to put the cake tray in another tray filled with water and then the whole thing use to go in the oven and bake. 2 batters use to be prepared and then put on one another and then put in the oven. Can someone provide me that recipe again?

i just made a cake from scratch. the cake came out the oven perfict but it tastes like it has some kind of spice! it has this hot kind of after taste. what do u think this could be?
i used this recipe
* 1 cup all-purpose flour
* 3/4 cup white sugar
* 1/4 cup shortening
* 1/2 cup milk
* 2 teaspoons baking powder
* 1/2 teaspoon salt
* 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
* 2 whole eggs
i just added on top of that a little bet of orange extract.
oh yea i didnt use the salt at all!
